La Mascara 2009 ( The Mask ) Tutorial

Step 1

I was working on making new brushes from existing
patterns with paths. So I have this brush that is a
flower pattern. I then made a new path and used the
Stroke path setting along with Brush parameters to
achieve a cylindrical pattern that I used for the painting.

Step 2

I then used a photo from the internet of a Solar Flare, I have used this
image before, and I like the feel of the image. It has really great texture
and vibrant color.

Step 3

In this layer I used a custom brush that I made by combining different custom
brushes. Using ( Overlay ) I then saw how the layer interacted with the others.
I used the Eraser tool and got rid of what I didn't want, so that the layers
underneath would blend. I tend to make copies of my layers and change the color
Value in order to get a gradient effect.

Step 4

A Photo from the internet that I applied ( Overlay ) and Opacity at 50 %

Step 5

Copy of Layer three.

Step 6

Layer three 150 % larger than the original ( Multiply ) setting.

Step 7

A face I painted using Photoshop, ( overlay ) setting

Step 8

Its what I call a " Stream " basically its a straight line brush in which I
apply ( Warp ) to and play around with the shapes.

Step 9

Custom Brush I mirrored to make the head dress Here the brush is White and the background
in Black but I did that for the sake of the tutorial. The brush or layer is transparent
due to the ( Overlay ) settings.

Step 10

This a really neat custom brush that my son make using Alchemy. Alchemy is a sketching software
that allows you to create vector based forms using a tablet.

Step 11

A simple gradient that I overlaid on a Black background.

OLA21 Poster

OLAfest and me!

Greetings to all! This past Monday I had a meeting with the creator’s of OLAfest and OLA21. We discussed the event and what I can contribute to it. The meeting went well for both parties being that we had great ideas, and the creative possibilities where exciting! Me being of simple mind really didn’t think much would come from my contribution. But Alan helped me envision the plan at a much grander scale.

For a long time I have been working in Photoshop creating these little images using filters, photography, and color gradients that produce images like many of you have seen. Since then I turned those images into the Binary Series 2010, and now I will be creating unique imagery that will be displayed in a local movie theater during the festival. So HD quality artwork and the technical aspect of this, to a computer geek like me is equivalent to handing me the keys to Willy Wonka’s Factory. My imagination has been beating the hell out of me, and so in short. I have a ton of ideas that will soon be translated into a Poster for OLA21, Postcards, Web media, and background imagery for a poetry reading and interpretive dance presentation. Along with being able to display my work in a enormous way that I thought would never be possible!

Now that the little excited child in me has been given a chance to speak, you are probably wondering what is OLAfest and OLA21? Well Orlando Local Agenda ( OLA ) it is an art movement that is working on AWAKENING a art and cultural awareness here in Orlando Florida. They are gathering artist, and filmmakers alike to make a ten-day festival that is sure to entertain and shake up the art community. And I must say I am honored to be part of it.

For more information please feel free to visit the following:

http://awakeningartculture.org/

http://www.olafest.org/

Tune in periodically for more info and updates, the site is still being constructed.

So here is a sample of the work that is going to be presented. I have been working on this image and a few others, so that we may be able to test it in the theater.

BINARY ARTSHOW 2010

Hello all as you know I am in the process of releasing my latest art series in art show format. I am looking for anyone who would like to help me put this thing together.

I'm looking for a place to host the BINARY art show in Orlando, Tampa, and Miami. If those go well I am looking at N.Y. and L.A. If any one wants to help please email me here or at snstrsin@gmail.com

The series is in digital format so I don't have physical prints for gallery presentation. I will be using my laptop, monitors, or projector and a local HP printer to print out 8 X 11 prints of your choice for 5.00 ea. I will also download the high resolution JPGs and PDF Tutorials for anyone that brings a USB Flash Drive. I will also be explaining the series the same night of the show.

What we need:

Monitors to display the artwork, I have 4 that I am using at the moment. If the space it large then I will need more or just use a projector.

Location: I would like it to have WIFI in order to email AVATARS and MOBILE WALLPAPERS to anyone at the show.

Location must be a chill environment very little noise because the series has a soundtrack that will be playing during presentation.

Please don't offer up your home, it is very generous but I fear that too many people will show up.

The Goal:

Is to share an evening of art, and friendship. I have always been an artist that likes to interact with my fans, for I consider you all my closest friends. So I will present the artwork, and then spend time with each of you. If you own a business and want to network it is encouraged, strength comes from helping each other. And if you are looking for an evening to just chill and meet new and exciting people then this is for you. Anyone who knows me knows it is real fun!

Thanks to all the kind people that have helped me so far, I love and appreciate you, your time and hard work!!

I thank you in advance!

The Caretaker

Once a well-respected surgeon, he became the caretaker of the Shady Oaks Cemetery in the small town of Willamette Valley. Caine later converted the Victorian-style mansion he and his family lived in into a mortuary/funeral parlor. For years during his career as a surgeon, Dr. Caine was intensely interested in the workings of the body and what happened to the patients he couldn't save, what happens to a person when they die. Caine and his family eventually used the deceased of the town as guinea pigs in unnatural and bizarre experiments. His demented "extended family", made up of blood relatives and deranged assistants, dug up the bodies of both the recent and not-so-recently dead and used them for either Caine's experiments, their elaborate "parties", or as house decoration. Caine performed these experiments in an attempt to discover the nature of the "soul". For fresh specimens, Caine would go into the nearby town to find homeless people, and, in what seemed like a charitable offer, invited them to his Mansion/funeral home until they got back on their feet. Instead of helping, though, he would perform horrifying surgeries on them, carving them open on the operating table while they were restrained and often fully conscious and without anesthetic.

Caine occupied his time performing acts of the most base cruelty: chemical injections, brutal amputations, live dissections, castrations without anesthesia, electroshock, even organ removal. Caine kept notes and audio recordings, but as time went on and his madness increased these became rambling discussions often delving into the philosophical.

The Usher ( Julian Browning ) 2009 HHN19

And I promise you I'll never desert you again because after 'Salome' we'll make another picture and another picture. You see, this is my life! It always will be! Nothing else! Just us, the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark!... All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up.

SPOOKEY EMPIRE'S ULTIMATE HORROR WEEKEND 2009

Well well horror fans across the zombie infested landscape, I just got back from the event and let me tell you. It was a magnificent gathering of interesting and eccentric people!

I arrived at 10:30 am and the event was already bursting at the seems with horror fans. Which in my opinion was a great sight for sore eyes. I am happy to see that horror is alive and doing well. I had the distinct pleasure to meet the nicest people in the industry.

I walked around a bit and got the chance to see lots and lots of horror merch. Great to see that sort of stuff. After some shopping I moved over to the Q&A session for Jason Mewes and Derek Mears. It was fun, exciting, and extremely funny. Between graphic and sexual shenanigans with catty responses the duo seemed to be having fun with the event. One of the best Q&A's that I have ever attended. Most sessions seem planned and scripted, with boring dialog. But these two were real down to earth. The kevin Smith fans were out and so Jason received a ton of questions regarding the comedy Jedi.

After this I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Leonard Pickel Event Coordinator for Hauntcon. I highly recommend checking out www.hauntcon.com and that event in April and May.

Shortly got a chance to meet Tom Savini, a down to earth person really friendly and approachable. Also met Sara Karloff a really witty sweetheart! Ricou Browning was a special treat as for C.F.T.B.L. is one of my favorite classics. George Romero was a no show, and so that was a bummer for Zombites everywhere. Linda Blair was present, Tipi Hedren looking good as always. Terrance Zdunich was present and stealing hearts more and bodies. Many many more...

But the highlight for me was the Q&A session with my personal word smith hero, Max Brooks!!! Author of Zombie Survival Guide, World War Z, and his latest work Recorded Attacks. Max is just as entertaining to listen to as his father. I can listen to him talk all day long. With witty jokes, and interesting stories. He gave us a natural speech about the creative process of the books. He explained how he didn't think much of the book when he wrote it and it turns out that the Guide is being translated into 18 different languages and sold over 1 million copies! He gave us all inspiration and tips to trade. Funniest question asked was delivered from a zombite with tattered clothes, he began to ask Max how can the world benefit from an outbreak! Max's response was brilliant, What your not happy with all the current problems humanity is facing?

The session went on for an hour as Max stood on two chairs in a cramp room, that to me was ridiculous considering the magnitude of fans that were there.

And so to conclude my blog, I went to Max Brooks' booth and chatted with him for a good bit. Truly amazing time and event.

My only concern with the event is that perhaps it is too big to be hosted in a hotel. I don't know the logistics of the event and I don't hold it against them. So if you attend the remaining days be warned that it is a bit hard to negotiate the hallways and restroom areas.

BINARY SERIES 2010

What is Binary Series 2010?

Binary is my latest art series created in Photoshop using thousands of images
from the internet, Filters, and custom brushes to tell a tale of an Artificial Intelligent
Computer using various methods of communication to convey a message.

I have always had a deep fascination with Science and Technology, Ever since I was a child I would
dismantle things to see how they were created and how they operate. Plus I was never any good at putting
the objects that I dismantled back together, so I would study them.

And so this series is an old avenue that I wanted to explore in 1997, but now have the means to bring the
series to a multimedia level. With sites like Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter. It only made sense to create
the content in the form it was ment to be in.

The Series was originally going to be electronic parts strung together on wooden frames with wires. I created
a piece that was roughly 6' X 6' and it hung in my office for several years before I got rid of it. My wife would tell
me what are you gonna do with this thing? And it hit me like a ton of bricks, it echoed in my mind since 1997, ( WHAT ARE YOU
GONNA DO WITH THIS THING? ) And so I started to think about the message. What do I want to say? How do I want to say it?

Then the times caught up with me and the answer was clear. Just use all the technology that fits the series. I liked the idea
that I can use social networking websites to bring the series to life. And so I began to break up the poetry of the series, in the form
of " TRANSMISSIONS ". I later posted those transmission to entice the public. Many would send me email saying OK DUDE YOU NEED HELP! and
I knew then that I had struck a cord. I have noticed that people tend to connect the artist to the art. Forgetting that I am just a vessel.
And so with the feed back I was receiving I knew that the series was working. And continued to finish the series with new energy and excitement!

Binary deals with the idea of machines learning from Humans. And in turn the " AI " becoming self aware.
Through Film and Literature we have seen how wonderful and frighting this concept can be. So I wanted to play
with the idea of " AI " expressing it's self through Technology.

If Humans created an artificial life form and it is to learn from us then what would it do? That's the burning question. Many believe that
creating thinking computers is the end of Humanity, as the Terminator Theme song plays in the background. And others believe that we can program
the AI to only deal with its programing, and a set number of rules that it must follow in order to remain active. I wanted to raise the question
and let you decide what your opinion is on the subject.

What are the images, and why are they not clear?

The series was intended to be the learning process of an AI from its " ACTIVATION " and so with processors processing millions of calculations at once
the data would look jumbled up if it was displayed in the form of Pixels. Machines operate in the form of " Binary Code " and so, it is a bunch of Zero's and One's.
I wanted to find a way to actually get images from the Binary code but I never found a way to do so. And so I decided to create data that would express emotions
through images. The images are jumbled up because I wanted to create the feeling of a computer sending the images, thinking its making sense. I was watching SAW and
I got the idea that solidified my theory. Two men are tied together, one can't see and the other can't talk. And that is the same concept behind Binary. A computer
wanting to communicate but has not yet learned how.

How will the Series be displayed?

In the begining I wanted to launch a huge viral campaign that included Billboards, and TV spots that would result in a massive gathering of Artist in some Convention
Center, for a huge art festival. But as I created the series it became more and more personal. I found that a quiet display would work best. And that fans of my work view and experience my art
in their own way. For some reason people connect to it in private ways, and so in respect to my fans. I decided to create multimedia files that adhere to people's personality.
If you like reading then you can download the PDF with all the poetry and behind the scene tutorials of how I create my work. If you want to express yourself then you can buy a
shirt, etc. Also the way the series turned out it made it really cool to have the content in different forms that everyone can appreciate.

Influence and Resources

Nine inch nails play a big roll in this series, because the music always has little hidden sounds that I love! I am a fan of Trent Reznor and I feel that the music transcends into the art.
The Albums WITH TEETH, YEAR ZERO, Ghosts, and THE SLIP are all what drove the series. I am in the process of contacting Trent Reznor to see if he would be interested in working together perhaps
BINARY will become more than what it is, you never know.

http://www.nin.com/

Google also played a huge roll in as well. The series was created with images that were found online and then edited to create artwork. Some images became brushes and some filtered images.

http://www.google.com/

Wikipedia is were I read most of the articles on Artificial Intelligence.

http://www.wikipedia.org/

Facebook, Youtube and Twitter is what I used to launch the viral campaign and marketing.

and last but not least my play thing for the past few months, is Cleverbot. I have been interacting with Cleverbot and it fit perfectly with the series I recommend that you read up on that!

BINARY ART SERIES PROMO 001

A Sinister marriage of Nightmarish Proportions!

The extremely kind folks at Horrornight Nightmares.com and Gomez Studio Inc.
sat down on a dark, and rainy night to discuss the possibility of combining forces for next year's Haunting season.

The final outcome of such a meeting well you will have to tune in periodically and find out!

Mark is plowing a new path when it comes to Horror Forums. He and his staff Jenn, and Jordan have created a site that is powerful enough
to contain the most up to date horror information and History of Halloween Horror Nights.

Many forums promise to provide a good night's stay and the general public ends up sifting through meaningless threads that leave you
well... uninformed and aggravated to the point of fracture.

I fully endorse this site not only because I will be working with them but because it provided me the information that I needed right away
hassle free.

At the moment we are still working out the details as to what I will be bringing to the table, but I assure you that is will be
Sinister enough to make your skin crawl.

Don't miss out on the Forum that will keep you hiding under the covers, praying that whatever is under your bed won't want to play with you.

Sign up and leave the light on we like to watch you scream!!!

Army Of Darkness Tutorial

Army Of Darkness Tutorial
by: Lazaro Gomez

I would like to start off by saying THANK YOU to my
fans, and to anyone that maybe viewing this Tutorial.

By doing this I hope that I can help other artist like me to achieve their goals as I have.
The painting you see before you is an exercise for me because I am still getting used to Photoshop, it is a great tool
but it lacks the traditional feel of other software such as Painter. And perhaps I should have done this painting using Painter
but my goal was to practice, practice, practice.

Many people ask me what brushes I use as it is a common question among artist. And so I am using this Painting as a tutorial and you
will see what tools I used to make it. A lot of the time I use brushes that come standard with the software. Hard and Soft Brush and a few others
but as far as Custom brushes, I have them but rarely use them. So let's get started!

1. Reference

It is almost vital to work of a reference, so for mine I used the all mighty Internet and found an image that I wanted to paint. For this painting
I was looking to challenge myself and try to overcome some things that effect me as an artist. Those will be listed through out the Tutorial. So here
we have a painting by John Bolton. I have seen a lot of paintings and photos of Ash and at first I was gonna use the Movie Maniacs as Reference but decided to go with the Movie Poster.

2. Outline

Now that we have our reference, we can move on to the next step. I open the reference image in Photoshop and begin to map out the key elements that will guide me along as I paint. Many people use many methods to make this step work for them. Some make a layer on top of the reference and trace over the outline, some free hand the process. For me, I have done both. So its preference really.

3. Color Selection or Pallet

I normally make a pallet but being that I had the reference right next to the painting, I opted to not make one. I simply selected colors as I went. Plus I didn't have to worry about Lighting because all that data was in the Original image.

4. Shapes

shapes are important in any drawing or Painting. It is easy to get tangled up in drawing the " PERFECT " line when in life and art there is not such thing. So I tend to view things in shapes rather than their actual form. I have learned that it makes it easier for me to view the work and keep all the guess work OUT! Try it some time, you will be amazed to find out how quickly your render will come together.

5. Refinement

Here you will begin to take those shapes and start refining them. For this painting I used the SMUDGE tool GASP! a huge no no in the art biz, but I have found that it can come in handy if used properly. Here is where I use my hard and soft brushes, at different Opacity and Flow levels. Along with Dodge and Burn another one of those popular no no's, again used right it can be a blessing. In Photoshop it is hard to use tools in the traditional sense so we gotta fudge it a little to make it happen. I combine my soft brush with a chalk brush to give me that added texture that is lacking in this Software.

6. Side Note Info

Ash has signature features that are important, and can't be ignored. So keep an eye out for things like this when painting, it helps to sell the painting. In this case its that signature eye gesture, mouth, and the Chainsaw. One could take artist freedom as I have done but not too much, if not you will again get lost and the painting will be ruined.

7. Final

Thank you for viewing! Please feel free to ask any questions, and or leave any comments.

Zombies any one?

Ok, so its apparent that my favorite aspect of horror is the undead. Ever since I saw Night of the Living Dead by George A. Romero I was hooked so here is my tribute to George!

Night of the Living Dead, directed by George Romero, is a 1968 independent black-and-white zombie film. Ben (Duane Jones) and Barbara (Judith O'Dea) are the protagonists of a story about the mysterious reanimation of the recently dead, and their efforts, along with five other people, to survive the night while trapped in a rural Pennsylvania farmhouse.

George Romero completed the film on a $114,000 budget, and after a decade of cinematic re-releases, it grossed some $12 million domestically and $30 million internationally. On its release in 1968, Night of the Living Dead was strongly criticized for its explicit content, but in 1999, the Library of Congress placed it on the National Film Registry as a film deemed "historically, culturally or aesthetically important",

"They're coming to get you, Barbra!"

Doodle To Art!

Well for good practice I start the day with a doodle or sketch.
A lot of the time it helps me with a few things, for one it helps
loosen up my hand and I try to keep the doodles loose enough that they
can become anything. Another thing is that when I have projects to do
it helps to get my mind in gear. It's the perfect way to avoid creative blocks.
Much like writers artist go through the same thing!

So I start off with a single layer dark it and create a second Layer in
which I start to doodle. For this I use a big 10px solid brush and lay down
some dark color usually almost black, R52 G52 B52.

Once that is done I pick a lighter color and place the brush settings at 25% Opacity
50% Flow. From there I start making shapes until something comes up.

Now by this point I have a clear vision of what I want to create, So I move froward
into thinking of Lighting. Once I figure out my Shadows, Mid tones, and Highlights, I
begin to refine areas of interest.

Once the painting in complete with the steps mentioned above I begin to work with an
OVERLAY layer and use a soft brush with BLACK and WHITE to enhance the lighting. After that
I start to play with effects.

So listed below are some samples of The Daily Doodle Exercise.

SketchUp
